Revisiting Histories

Sanford Biggers + Andrea Geyer and Simon J. Ortiz
Wednesday, September 1, 2010 to Wednesday, December 1, 2010

Curated by Niels Van Tomme, Director of Arts and Media at Provisions Learning Project.

Instead of regarding history as a factory of truth, Revisiting Histories proposes that history is a challenging field of meaning and narrative, an area that needs to be actively questioned and retold. The exhibition, by focusing on the liberating potential of redirecting history, evokes the past to better comprehend the present. It wants to emphasize possible ways in which prevailing historical scripts can be modified by dissident voices. Discarding history as an accumulation of master-narratives, it radically re-imagines its counterpart, the multiple histories that have been excluded from official discourse.

Taking the works of Sanford Biggers and Andrea Geyer & Simon J. Ortiz as exemplary cases, Revisiting Histories is an inquiry into the nature of history and the importance of its critical rendition. As such, it presents merely one of the possible readings of the artworks, proposing them as a means to open up a dialogue about history’s exclusionary course and the possible liberation from it. More specifically, Revisiting Histories wants to investigate how the artists’ conceptual frameworks can potentially be implemented as a way to further realize the project of social justice.
